Well hello again. I guess I want to first start this blog off by saying what I think post modernism truly is. Modernism was a time of structure. It was grades, and standards, and functionality, and similarity. It was a time where people hoped for utopias that were never reached. Post modernism was a time to cope with the feelings of disappointment. People began to realize that complete knowledge does not necessarily give the world complete joy. Protein was not longer the end all cure all.
Cats Cradle is a good representation of this. The book in itself is a little disheveled. It starts off by saying "All of the true things I am about to tell you are shameless lies". Each chapter has a name completely different from the rest. Some of these contain quaint poems and odd characters. Most of the information the narrator collects is from odd sources. He gains knowledge from bartenders and prostitutes. He uses Newt as one of his main sources of information who was only 6 when the information he needs for his book took place. The book itself is odd. It asks why? This is a very post modern agenda. He wanted to know why and what and how such a weapon was created, rather than trying to discover the mathematics and logic of it. The book over all just seems illogical.
Newt is also the most put together out of all of his siblings and even he faces is own set of oddities. He is a little person and is also romantically acquainted with one who is a Russian ballerina. Angela is intriguing as well. She is emotionally distraught and plays the clarinet like she is schizophrenic.
The main area where this book is post modern is with the religion of Bokononism. The religion itself seems to be satirical of modernism. It gives its followers a purpose. People don't simply come and go, there is a structure to it. There is always a logical reason for what is happening and how it is happening even if you don't know that reason yourself. It gives this man's illogical life a logical meaning. This is similar to the idea of modernists to give a completely illogical world and logical basis. Both sound completely and totally ridiculous.
