" He is better than they are at being an Indian," as said in the video describing how white men were portrayed in movies involving Indians. Indians are often portrayed as blood thirsty savages who show up in a frightening display of feathers and primitive weapons. Wasn't it Columbus who discovered America, is it not he who we have a day dedicated? Indians have often been seen as primitive, and not human. Was it not the Native Americans who started this country though? They were the ones who first found this land. Their languages were the ones to first articulate what the land that we call America looked like. Though it was not the Native Americans who came up with the constitution, or wrote the Star Spangled Banner, they deserve some credit. It may have been Columbus who first discovered America, but it was the Native Americans who first lived here. They found potential in the trees, and the grass, and the land. They made something out of nothing, not the other way around, and to just show them in a display of blood and savage is not fair. How do we change this though? How do we change any of the misconceptions, and misrepresentations there are with a single story? We must tell a new one. We must respond, and provide a rebuttal to that story. Caliban is similarly portrayed in the way the Native Americans were. He was the first to inhabit the Island, and then Prospero came to take over and 'improve' him. Prospero felt as if he had given Caliban the gift of language, but Caliban's reply to it is "You taught me language, and my profit on ’t Is I know how to curse. The red plague rid you For learning me your language!" Prospero only harmed what Caliban had, and in his attempt at love, he made him a slave. Similar to the Native Americans Caliban is portrayed as savage and primitive and in need of help and 'love'.
